“Stress can cause your brain to dysfunction and your body to collapse. Stressors may differ in origin. They can be physical – an exhausting rugby game; environmental – an earthquake; or physiological – fear of being fired or rejected, but the effect of stress is a physiological change in your brain and bodily organs. It cannot differentiate between the different sources of stress.” (Dr Micky Pistorius).
The neocortex (part of the brain) is involved in higher functions of the brain such as sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought and language.
Our neocortex is highly sensitive to stress, and when we are chronically stressed or anxious, even if not in immediate danger, we will not be able to learn new things easily. Children can also be chronically stressed from feeling pressure to please attachment figures or to do right, they then are not able to learn well because of less activation in the neocortex and more in the subcortical brain. Excessive stress can disrupt the development of the brain.
We are dealing with your basic functioning with regard to stress and the level of stress you experience. With the knowledge of this, skills will form part of how to manage stress as well as the way your mind and brain will play a role in this. Every person has his/her own window of tolerance as well as his own survival space.
In this course we work with an “ecomap” – people, the environment, systems, (all ecological levels) that have an influence on you, as well as the positive and/or negative effect on you. Working through this you can have an understanding of different people/systems that fill your soul, or drain you. This is a powerful tool to assist you to manage your stress, and then work towards optimum/high level of living.
